GINZA ROOFTOP PROJECT is a linked project that connects five facilities in Ginza – Matsuya Ginza, Ginza Mitsukoshi, Wako, Tokyu Plaza Ginza and GINZA SIX – through exhibitions of artists selected by the TOKYO PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH.

MATSUYA GINZA by GU KENRYOU
Venue: Matsuya Ginza｜MG Terrace
I looked at Ginza from the roof of a building. I saw countless vent fans and the town filled with the sound of construction. And I saw boxes without even windows lining the streets as far as the eye could see, as if to keep the actual scene from appearing. Outside all I could see were warehouses, while inside was a utopia for consumption. I wonder how this upside-down scene, which once attracted people from all over the world, reflects the current times and how it will change.
Profile:
Born in Kyoto in 1994 and raised in Shanghai. Gu graduated from the Contemporary Art and Photography Course, Kyoto University of Art and Design. During his undergraduate years, he studied abroad at The National School of Photography in Arles, France. He is currently based in Tokyo. Relying on his bodily senses within urban spaces as the foundation of his unique method of recomposing a mixture of different time and space, Gu conveys sections of unapparent informational strata through his works. In 2019, Gu received sanwacompany Art Award / Art in The House 2019 and in 2018 he was won KG＋ Award 2018. FLOATIN by MAYUMI HOSOKURA
Venue: Ginza Mitsukoshi｜Ginza Terrace, Terrace Garden
I have created a brand new viewpoint, including diverse perspectives, from which to observe scenes of the Ginza townscape, with people coming and going, fused together to form a digital collage from show windows, printed materials of the past and the internet. These dozens of overlapping images seem like virtual images reflected in window, while also seeming like a new reality.
Profile:
Born in Kyoto, Japan. Based in Tokyo. Graduated from Faculty of Literature, Ritsumeikan University and Institute of Photography, Nihon University of Art. Hosokura reorganizes boundaries that are/were regarded natural between organic and inorganic matter, human and animal or machine, as well as nationalities and races, based on sexuality and gender. BELLS by SHUTA HASUNUMA

The sound of the bell ringing out the time of day from the Wako rooftop. The sound and reverberation of this bell is an everyday thing in Ginza 4-chome. It has seen the town change over a long period of time. And as the town keeps changing so do the people who come and go in Ginza 4-chome. Everyday things become vague and the different time lines of the people appear before one’s eyes from the music created through the “sound” of the bell reverberating through the town.
Profile:
Born in Tokyo in 1983. Has been involved in many musical endeavors, including performing concerts in Japan and abroad; producing music for film, plays and dance; and other musical production. Has been involved in a wide range of musical activities, including sound work utilizing environmental sound and electronic sound, and cooperative work such as large ensembles of the Shuta Hasunuma Philharmonic.
Also, applying musical composition and using material expression, he has produced sculpture and video and installations and has been involved in other projects. In 2013, he went to New York as the grandee of the Asian Cultural Council (ACC). In 2017, he was appointed to the Council for the History of Cultural Exchange in East Asia of the Agency for Cultural Affairs. His main private exhibitions include “Compositions” (New York, Pioneer Works 2018) and “____ing” (Tokyo, Shiseido Gallery 2018). I photograph the surface of skateboard parks that were originally bathing resorts, as if I could taste them. While thinking about the memories city people have of a bathing resort, and thinking about the history of young people who skateboarded in a pool in California that was empty of water because of the drought. In this installation, which has been developed as if the relationship between memory and history, real images and virtual images, and body and space were piled one on top of the other, it is my aim to translate (or perhaps mistranslate) the activity that has become a custom at a place called “the pool.”

Born in Kyoto in 1983. Graduated from the course in lacquer work in the Department of Fine Art at Kyoto City University of Arts, and in 2016 obtained a doctorate in media art from the graduate school of Kyoto City University of Arts. Produces works of art based on his physical senses as a skateboarder and the relationship between the city and the body. Through an overlapping of three types of media – video, photography and sound – recorded in 3D depth data, photographed or recorded in sound in the town of Ginza, Ginza Ground Gap is an installation that brings about spatial changes in the rooftop gardens, while softly fusing together scenes on the ground with views from the rooftops, and creating a slight feeling of discomfort and elation in the streets of Ginza and among the people coming and going there. The movement of the people strutting around Ginza is depicted in the video; the photography is generated from the object that creates the surface and boundaries of the town; and the sound is captured from the vibrations created by the people as they walk as well as the vibrations of the air itself.

Taisuke Koyama
Born in 1978, based in Tokyo. Koyama was based in London for two years since 2014 via the Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, then in Amsterdam before returning to Japan in 2017. With a background in biology and natural environmental studies, he takes various experimental approaches to explore today’s photographic expression. Recent solo exhibitions include Waves and Particles (Metronom, Modena, 2019), Sensor_Code (Seen Fifteen, London, 2018) and Phase Trans (G/P gallery, Tokyo, 2018). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions such as Seoul Photo Festival〈Brave New World〉(SeMa, Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, 2018), AIMIA | AGO Photography Prize 2017 (Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, 2017) and Aichi Triennale 2016 Trans Dimension (Okazaki Cibico, Okazaki, 2016). www.tiskkym.com

Crossing over between idea, design, technology and business, this is a creative group that realizes the experience of the future in society. The group boasts many achievements fusing the latest technology with storytelling, including such works of art as “Plan to Attract People to the 2025 Osaka Kansai International Exposition” at Mori Art Museum, and “Gangu,” which is in the permanent exhibit at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. The group also did the spatial design of Terminal 3 at Narita Airport and the creative direction of the Japanese edition of the magazine Wired. prty.jp
Shohei Amimori
Born in Tokyo, in 1990. Musician and composer. Graduated from the Department of Composition, Faculty of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts and from the Graduate School of Music of the same school. He began activities as a composer and arranger of classical and contemporary music since his student years and released many works ranging from chamber to orchestral music. In recent years, he has engaged in other genres such as pop music and sound art as well. Besides showcasing his works and performance utilizing various methods, Amimori has produced music for television advertisements and shows and participated in projects of many artists as a studio musician. His major works include the musical album PataMusic (noble, 2018) and the sound installation Broken Silencer (MOT Satellite 2017 Fall, Tokyo, 2017). shoheiamimori.com
