I can (not) hear you
Mayumi Hosokura approaches the youth in Tokyo and requests them to dance to the song of their choice. The body movements they make while listening to the music with earphones or headphones are captured with a camera mounted on a tripod. Throughout her career, Hosokura has captured the youth in countries of Asia such as Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China and her new series I can (not) hear you took shape in this manner.
A portrait does not capture the internal facets of a person. However, (or that is why) we have always expected one’s existence or inner character to surface in the resulting image. Seeming to be an extension of this theme, the series portrays the free movements of the bodies and the clothes and accessories worn by the subjects, while restraining the viewers from listening to the music they are listening to, let alone the song title. We imagine the beat of the music while looking at the bodies moved by it. In that process, these surprisingly rich details convey to us the vivid sensation that moves the city of the present-day.
